Capella Hanoi, Hanoi, Vietnam, 25 October 2025

This was a somewhat unusual breakfast for the region. The buffet is medium-sized, but quite varied, that is to say, various kinds of cheese, fish (the smoked mackerel was excellent!), cold cuts, salad and vegetables. Also a very nice choice of fresh fruit, cut and uncut. The cheese, cold cuts and yoghurt were in a cool cabinet, an excellent idea. The bread was very good. Tea was loose leaf (I had an excellent pu’er) and there was of course a choice of juices. But regular readers will notice two things missing: no hot dishes, which was strange enough; and no local cuisine, which is even stranger. This initial impression was soon corrected. There was one part of the buffet which had local condiments and bits and pieces, (including a chicken liver pate; the local Jewish influence?). More to the point, in addition to the buffet there was a menu from which you could order warm dishes, including local (as in the wider region). While everything was good quality, the ambiance was somehow not quite up to top scratch. I can’t explain why. I was going to give this 8/10, but two things made me change my mind. First, the phở gà (chicken phở) which was recommended as a signature dish, really was top class. And second, they had five(!) kinds of honey (wild, rambutan, longan, Tam Dao and coffee flower). As a borderline (type 2) diabetic I am very into honey, which strangely enough is fine for diabetics. So the final score is a very good 9/10.
