Orange Hotel, Urumqi, China, 1 October 2026

You have to judge a breakfast, not only against your tastes and preferences, but also against local breakfast culture. This is true; but is it also the start of a bad review? Not sure. This was a reasonable buffet, very heavy on the local (Chinese, not Uighur) food with a bit of a nod towards Western. (In general, non-Western hotels will almost always have some Western breakfast offering; Western hotels are usually not so accommodating!) The Chinese choice was good and what I tried was very nice. The Western choice was somewhat disappointing, mainly bread, butter, jam and ham. The choices of cereals, fruit and vegetables were decent. But the tea was a huge disappointment: there was sweet tea which was not very nice; and local milk tea (a nod to the Uighur culture) which was undrinkable. So on that basis, I am awarding this 4/10.
