This is a perfectly decent, average breakfast. And yet I am still going to mark it down slightly. That is not as strange as it sounds. Again, judging it by local standards, it is an ample buffet, with quite a lot of choice. Good spread of warm dishes, including rice and noodles and eggs, a nod to Western taste with chips (that’s fries to American readers) and chicken. Also steamed buns, fresh vegetables, congee, etc. The fruit choice is limited to watermelon and tangerines. The tea is bags only, and I did not spot any juice. Everything I tasted was perfectly fine. So why mark it down? Perhaps somewhat silly of me, but given that they’re were some Western dishes (in addition to the above, also bread for toasting with butter and jam) the only utensils on offer were chopsticks and spoons. I am as handy with chopsticks as the next person, but I am quite incapable of buttering toast with a chopstick or a spoon. More to the point, the knife is arguably the most versatile all-round implement ever invented. Would it be so difficult to have a few of them there? And so although by my usual standards, this would deserve to be 5/10, I’m giving it 4.5.
